Mark Schmitt

Tile Art

Mark SchmittMark grew up the son of a carpenter and always had a love of working with wood. A member of the Santa Rosa Arts Foundation (Artist #73) Dragon Fly Gallery - Milton, and the Blue Morning Gallery - Pensacola, his unique art consisting of tile and wood has been developed over several years. Mark is one of only a handful of artists working in this medium. His art is recognizable by the precision cuts and spacing of the tiles in his wall hangings, mirrors, clocks and tables. Each original work takes between 10 to 15 hours to create over a period of 7 to 10 days due to the various drying times of stain, polyurethane, adhesives, grout and sealant.

A native of Kent Ohio, Mark enlisted in the Navy flying as an Aircrewman venturing to over 50 countries. He completed 33 years of service and retired as a Commander in August 2005. After retirement, with the help of friends and family, he built a studio and started his tile art business, “Mark of Distinction.” Mark and his wife Anita have resided in Pace, Florida since 1996. He has a Masters degree in counseling and psychology from Troy University and is employed part time as a Career Specialist and counselor at Pensacola Junior College.
