As the youngest of six artistic siblings, Gila was exposed to music & visual arts at an early age. While
majoring in music she enjoyed courses in ceramics, drawing & painting. After completing her Masters Degree in Music,
Gila moved to San Francisco, where she was introduced to the art of mosaic by her sister, herself a prominent artist.
Gila then worked & traveled extensively throughout Southeast Asia, including teaching music at the University of
Malaysia, Sarawak. It was there that she became increasingly aware of & fascinated by the indigenous art surrounding her.
Upon her return to the U.S.A. in 1999, Gila settled in New Orleans & worked actively as a freelance trombonist. Her
love for creating mosaics was rekindled while making a table for her partner. She became completely absorbed & has
not stopped creating art ever since. Hurricane Katrina prompted her to shift gears from making music to creating
mosaics, full time. More recently, Gila relocated to the Gulf Coast, where she finds plenty of inspiration.
The imagery in Gila's mosaics is eclectic, from abstract to realistic portraiture. She's fascinated with color &
texture, using a wide range of materials including, but not limited to, ceramic, marble, semi precious stones, shells
& an endless variety of glass. Each material has it's own characteristics & challenges. The physicality of cutting &
placing each piece keeps Gila focused & intimately connected to her work. She generally has a vision of where the
completed work is headed, but always allows for spontaneity & experimentation. Gila finds great pleasure in creating
unique compositions in which the viewer may get lost for hours.
