Donna Freckmann is a predominately mixed media artist and also a
freelance writer who often uses artists as the subject of her
writing believing the old adage, "it takes one to know one."
Best known for her collages, Donnašs work has a touch of an Oriental flare to it as she uses expensive Oriental papers and Chinese glyphs in her work. "Often when I use an Oriental word, I do know the meaning, but I'm just as attracted to the calligraphy the design I find intriguing. The Oriental constantly challenges me as the design associated with this work requires a lot of thought, balance and harmony." As the result of some minor surgery this past summer, Donna found herself on "house arrest" for over two weeks. "Even though I was in a lot of pain for five days, I sat around and did pieces of work for my greeting card line and then went on to do some paintings of wild and funky work. It's so bright and happy. My surgeon says he uninhibited me. I love this new work of geometric shapes and spirals and a few other favorite icons such as fish."
Besides the paintings and cards, Donna is also a jewelry artist making various beaded items from necklaces and matching earrings to watches. Another favorite in this genre includes pendants. "This fall I am taking a jewelry making class to augment my other skills with silver and other precious metals. I'm wearing frequently one of the silver bracelets I've been learning to make."
As a result of two life-threatening illness, Donna has developed a workshop for other people and groups that have had difficult challenges in their life. It incorporates collage making and journal writing two items that helped her own recovery. Called "Palettes and Pens, the Creative Healers Within," she gives the workshops at hospitals and other groups.
The eternal student, Donna has taken numerous art workshops over the years to hone her skills. She holds an undergraduate degree in Journalism from the University of Florida and a masters in Counseling and Human Development from Troy State.
