Using the age old technique of wet felting, the process of applying soap, water and agitation to wool fiber, Lorraine creates unique felted vessels, scarves, and 2D framed wall art (painting with fiber.) Her fiber pieces reflect the texture of the fiber and the process is totally free form. Lorraine has studied with some of the top felt artisans in the country, including Chad Alice Hagan and Lisa Klakulak. She has taken two intense felting classes at John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, North Carolina. Needle Felting is a relatively new art medium and is a spin-off of commercial felting. The felting process is done using barbed needles and is a dry felting technique. In 2001 there were only a handful of artists actively needle felting. Intrigued by the intricacy of sculpting with fiber and how you turn a pile of fiber fluff into a 3D object, she enrolled in an intense week long class with Sharon Costello at John C. Campbell Folk School to learn the technique, and has been needle felting ever since. Lorraine has taken several advanced classes and has also studied with Ayala Talpai, who probably is the “mother” of the art medium. . Lorraine’s wet felted and needle felted creations have won awards at several fine craft festivals, including Great Gulfcoast Arts Festival in Pensacola, Teddy Bear shows in Tampa and Indianapolis, the Fiber Fair in Fletcher, NC., and she has been featured in Teddy Bear Review, a trade publication for bear artists. Lorraine now teaches wet felting and needle felting at John C. Campbell Folk School in NC and the Fiber Fair in Fletcher, NC. She also teaches one day classes locally. In addition to her fiber pieces, Lorraine began studying watercolor in 2009. Drawing on the expertise and tutelage of her mother, Ruth Goldsborough, a professional artist for over 60 years, Lorraine has developed a flare for the medium. Currently she is working on a series of historic places in Santa Rosa County, first in watercolor and then transforming the scene into a fiber wall piece. After many years of doing outdoor festivals, Lorraine is glad to be included in Blue Morning Gallery and being “indoors.”
