Tile Art

Many different art forms use tile as the medium. Ceramic tile is most often seen on kitchen and bathroom walls and floors. With a little creativity and artistic ability, tile can be taken to a whole new level. Since ancient times, tile has been used in mosaics and remains popular today.

The two most common types of mosaics are those that use painted tiles and others that use small or broken tile pieces to form pictures or scenery. Tiles are affixed to a backing material and may or may not be grouted dependent on the spacing and the desired appearance.

Tile art is not limited to ceramic tile alone. Ceramic tiles fired in a kiln are the standard, but increasingly other materials are being used including glass, stone, composite, and even wood. There are also an almost infinite selection of colors with a variety of shapes, sizes, and thicknesses. To add further interest, different textures are available. Grouts come in a variety of types and colors, as well. Grout is the material used between the tile pieces to hold them in place and seal the work.

Tile art displayed at the Blue Morning Gallery is unique. Wall hangings, clocks, mirrors, and tables are made from precision hand-cut tiles that are ground to fit together perfectly. Designs are drawn, inspired by photographs, or modified from stained glass patterns. A wide variety of tile textures and grout colors are used to achieve dramatic effects. Tile designs are mounted and framed in oak or pine. All wood frames and grout lines are sealed for durability and years of enjoyment.

Come by the gallery to see these unique, one-of-a-kind creations.
